This is six months old or so. Since illustrating this news story, I've second-guessed my hack-job German. I'm pretty sure it should be Keine mehr Pillen.

This is for a Japan Relief Small Works Auction that Montserrat College of Art (my school!) is setting up. I saw a facebook gallery of other works that will be in the show (some of my previous teachers have work in the show!), and if you're in Beverly, you should check it out, and... not look at mine because the other work is AMAZING. I'm sort of embarrassed about this drawing now, because no one else's work is directly related to the theme of "Japan" and "Earthquake", and my idea seems obvious and ham-handed (It didn't even occur to me that I didn't have to deal with a theme at all!).

Sigh. Let this be a lesson for me. But here it is, and here's me being honest with you, and here's info on the show. All proceeds from the silent auction go to the Red Cross.

I promised myself that I wouldn't put "fan art" here, but it couldn't be helped. Aku draws himself; he's just that good of a character design.

I can hear my older brother laughing at me through the internet. (He compared me to Aku once.) Whatever, man. I'm still patiently waiting for that Samurai Jack movie to come out.

Oh, finaly a not-Queequeg! Not that that makes it better than a Queequeg, but still.

My favorite pen has been resurrected. It's a size M Schaeffer calligraphy pen that takes those little tubes of ink refills. I put it away years ago because the ink bleeds through acrylic paints when I just want the lines to stay covered, but then I picked it up again and damn it feels so good to draw with! Well, after I got all the dried ink crap out of the nib, it did.

The Decemberists' "The Legionaire's Lament" came up on shuffle mode as I was drawing. Perhaps my burn-out with that band's music has lightened?

I should start scanning other things that I've been working on, and soon. But not before I post Queequeg #1, drawn before I knew what my Fun-a-Day theme was going to be.

Then, I was bummed out and hadn't picked up a pencil to draw for a few weeks. Then I came across the meme where you draw your 10 favorite characters and have people guess them, and used it to force myself to get back on my feet. Amongst Katchoo, Roger Sterling, and Daleks, was Queequeg!

And it was all downhill from there…

The Finished Fun-a-Day show was fantastic. I met an entirely new crowd of people and saw some new great artwork and writing, which is something that everyone needs to do every now and then. I'll post a few photos of the show soon.


For now, here's… you guess it! A Queequeg! This one's a painting on a piece of weird, orange-painted material that I found around Salem State University. It's the biggest one, about 20x30. It was influenced by Saul Bass, uh, a little.

Queequeg and Ishmael had time to kill before signing up for the Pequod, so here they are acting up in a photo booth. Well, not photo, as much as scrimshaw booth. This makes sense. Yes






They're carved in ivory. Well, Ivory Soap. The technique is the same, just a whole lot more legal!

This painting is so, so brandywine school. And hey this one actually has a title! Queequeg Leaves His Father. Queequeg and I both abandoned all contact with our fathers to make ourselves stronger and spiritually bigger, so I wanted to make a nice finished illustration for his moment. His father isn't even in the picture. That's just how OVER Queequeg is with his life on Kokovoko. As for me, let's hope I don't end up drowning in a whirlpool of a giant whale's rage.

From the beginning, I wanted one of my Queequegs to be animated.

This one probably took the longest. I would add a frame or two during my lunchbreaks at work. This is my first attempt at animating anything by hand.

It was tedious, but you know what the BITCH of it all was? Figuring out how to string it all together and make it DVD-able on the computer. But the awesome thing: Even though I'm poor and don't have Flash like everyone else out there who thinks he's an artist, I can still make me some cartoons!

Nah, this isn't a real dollar. I'm too cheap to do that.
This one, Queequeg #31, was greatly influenced by Matt Kish's insanely insane One-drawing-for-every-page-of-Moby-Dick Project, which he has recently finished. My hat's off to him! I patiently await for the book.

A couple of people have asked me which character I'll do for next year's Fun-a-Day. I really like the suggestion of Fyodor Karamazov-a-day so far!
